Korea helps Myanmar implement school project

The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) of South Korea will help Myanmar to implement a technical school project in the country’s Thagar area.

KOICA was founded as a government agency in 1991, to maximise the effectiveness of Korea’s grant aid programmes for developing countries by implementing the government’s grant aid and technical cooperation programmes.

Teaching aids including hardware and software will be provided by the Korean overseas aid agency in cooperation with Myanmar’s Ministry of Industry.

KOICA has been involved in South Korean government’s several technical cooperation projects with Myanmar in a number of areas in recent years.

The projects include a three-year US$1.4 million project on development of Myanmar’s electric power network, upgrading of the country’s medical research capabilities, IT literacy and healthcare.

According to the KOICA, it funded Myanmar’s development programmes with US$2 million during 2006 covering projects in the sectors of health and IT.

Official statistics reveal that South Korea’s investment in Myanmar had reached US$231.3 million in 36 projects as of 2007 since the country opened to foreign investment in late 1988.
